It’s Halloween costume planning season again.
The big day is just a few weeks away. If you’re really serious about your Halloween costumes, you’re probably well on your way to finishing your look by now. But if you haven’t found the perfect idea yet, you don’t have to panic and buy a last minute costume just yet. There’s still time to put something unique and fun together.
If you’re still on the hunt for the right idea and the right materials to help you pull it off, the AWMA Blog can help.
As we said last year, anything that you order from AWMA.com can be used for a costume if you get creative enough. You can browse through our online store and see if anything sparks some new ideas for you.
But if you need a little help, we’ve got some suggestions to get you started.
Here are five Halloween costumes that you can make with martial arts gear and accessories from AWMA. We’ll start with a couple of easy ones and get more creative from there.
MMA Fighter
Whether you want to dress like The Smashing Machine or your favorite MMA competitor, AWMA has the gear that will help you look the part. Start with a pair of board shorts designed specifically for MMA like the ProForce® Thunder Board Shorts. Depending on where you want to wear your costume, you’ll probably need a shirt, so add an authentic MMA top like the ProForce® II Short Sleeve Rash Guard to the mix. And top it all off with a pair of MMA gloves the ProForce® Velocity MMA Synthetic Leather Gloves.
If you feel like training like your favorite fighter after dressing like them, you can also use this gear for MMA and MMA-inspired fitness classes after Halloween.
Muay Thai Fighter
If you like the idea of dressing like a fighter, but have different taste in martial arts — or different taste in martial arts gear — you can always choose to dress like a different kind of fighter instead. Muay Thai is a particularly good choice for this kind of costume, because Muay Thai gear is so distinct and recognizable. Even people who don’t know much about martial arts can identify a beautiful pair of Muay Thai shorts.
So that’s exactly where we’re going to start with this costume idea. Find a pair of Muay Thai shorts with a design that speaks to you. (These ProForce Sport® Flame Muay Thai Shorts come in Halloween colors if you really want to get into the spirit of the season.) Add a rash guard if you’re going somewhere that requires you to wear more than your bare chest or a bra top. Complete the look with a pair of boxing gloves. Or take your look to the next level by adding a pair of shin and instep guards.
You can also take all of this gear to the ring after Halloween.
Street Fighter
With a light weave Karate Uniform, accesories, and a pair of scissors, you can transform into two of Street Fighter’s most iconic characters.
Start with a 5 Oz Student Gi (available in white for Ryu and red for Ken). Cut off the sleeves for both and fray the pant legs for Ryu. Finish off your look with a black Karate belt and a pair of Kickboxing or MMA gloves.
Unless you have a really casual sensei, you probably won’t be able to wear your gi in Karate class after Halloween. But at least you’ll look great in costume. And your gloves will still be good to go after.
Couples Costumes For Single People
If you have a great idea for a couple’s costume and no one to dress up with, a ProForce® Filled Grappling Dummy could help you out.
Obviously investing in top of the line martial arts equipment and carrying around 35+ pounds (depending on the size) of a specialized heavy bag all night isn’t the most practical option . But if you’re really committed to your costume idea, this is one way to make it work. Take a grappling dummy. Dress it up as the other half of your Halloween vision. And take it out on the town.
If you’re of a certain age, you could also dress it up in khakis, a striped shirt, and blue windbreaker for a Weekend At Bernie’s theme.
When Halloween is over, your costume buddy will also make an excellent training partner for takedown, submission, and position drills.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
There are two ways that AWMA can help you dress like your favorite Ninja Turtle. For a more simple look, all you’ll need are two martial arts belt and your martial arts weapon of choice.
Order one thin Karate belt in your fave’s color to make a head or eye band. Order another Karate belt for your waist in either brown or black, depending on what version of TMNT you prefer. Add your own green clothing and shell and finish off the look with a bo, sai, sword, or nunchucks. (Rubber or foam practice weapons are a comfortable and practical choice for Halloween costumes.)
If you want to get a little fancier, AWMA happens to have a whole range of green sparring gear including ProForce® Ultra Lightning Kicks, ProForce® Lightning Sparring Gloves, and ProForce® Lightning Sparring Head Guard that can make you look even more like a mutant turtle. ProForce Sport even has neon green hand wraps that you can wrap around your arms and legs if you want to go even greener.
All of these items can be used to train like Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo, and Michelangelo after Halloween, too.
