SHOULD KIDS BE TRAINED TO FIGHT?

I’ve been coming across these videos lately on Facebook. Kids hitting pads. Kids fighting in rings. I can’t help but stop and watch. There’s a certain beauty to the movements that’s undeniable.

When a child learns a skill they really take to it with their entire being. There’s no judgemental mind constantly telling them what they should or should not do.

In our society, adults are responsible for telling a child what’s right and what’s wrong. This ammunition prepares the child for later trials in life and creates a base from which the child will make crucial decisions.

I started training in the martial arts when I was nine years old. I remember sparring from a really early age. When I did it, it was clearly taught to me for my development and I have to say that I’m really grateful for that. It taught me self reliance, courage, perseverance, problem solving. It really did prepare me for fights that would come later – fights of all sorts.

So there is a benefit to this kind of training. However, I don’t know how I feel when the children are made to fight in a situation that’s clearly for the benefit of others – for spectacle or entertainment. That doesn’t sit right with me.

Anyway I wanted to share some of these videos with you and ask what you felt about the subject. Please leave us your comments on our Facebook page.
